Introducing Slate’s newest columnist!

That’s right- it’s Eliot Spitzer!
Slate says it “did not hire Spitzer because of the notoriety he gained this year over his connection to the prostitution ring.” I love that the magazine has become a nice rehabilitation centre for publicly disgraced New Yorkers (also see: Henry Blodget, who’s started an alternate career as a blogger).

One more comment on these issues:
I’m generally a fan of the Globe and Mail’s reporting, but I really have to question their coverage of these issues. I’m not really sure what criteria they’re using, but in my opinion, neither of these stories were worthy of national press coverage- and definitely did not qualify for front page material. The “conversation cop” article seems merely intended to mock Queen’s (deservedly so), but fails to actually mention the underlying problem of intolerance on campus. That’s the real story worth reporting. Thumbs down to the G&M failing to promote intelligent discussion of important issues.

From the beginning of her campaign run, Sarah Palin has not been shy to voice her displeasure at the “liberal media establishment.”
According to this latest report, the Obama-Biden campaign has won the newspaper endorsement race by a landslide 240-114. The numbers become even more impressive when compared with the 2004 election figures, where Kerry just barely edged out Bush (213-205). I’d be curious to see historical trends on whether newspaper endorsements actually translate to votes.
As can be expected, American college newspapers overwhelmingly back Obama 69-1. Not surprising, given his popularity with youth. The lone voice of dissent comes from the Mississippian Daily, which bucked the trend and endorsed McCain:
What our decision ultimately comes down to, though, is who is more qualified for the position as the leader of the Free World. Sen. McCain will bring a lifetime of experience to the profession and serve our nation honorably as he has in the past.
I definitely give the editorial board credit for having the cajones to make this decision. I would, however, love to find out what qualifies Sen. McCain to be the leader of the “Free World.”
